Yesterday I was talking with someone here who had lived in the U.S.
Me: "Where did you live?"
Him: "You probably haven't heard of it. Turlock, California."
Me: "Sure, I've heard of it."
Him: "Really? Most people never heard of it."
Truth be told, the only reason I've heard of Turlock is because Truckin' shot straight to the top of the charts in Turlock, California. According to Bob. I feel like I've heard him say that a bunch of times ...
But did I? I can't actually think of or find a Turlock reference other than E72. Clearly my knowledge of meaningless trivia and stage banter is not nearly trivial enough.
According to Wikipedia, Truckin was on the chart for eight weeks from Jan 27, 1971, when it debuted at number 64. Although we know that wasn't Turlock, because there, it shot straight to the top of the charts. In my mind, this is clearly the most famous thing about the town of Turlock. Yet shockingly, it is not on Turlock's Wikipedia entry. Such an oversight! (What, Turlock has something more important to share about itself?)
Did Bob really say that a lot, or is it just me?

The other thing I know about from Turlock is way horrifying and grumesone, the one where that monster cut off that girls arms to dispose of prints and she SURVIVED! And he actually got out years later! Horrible story but was big news. When he got released he ended up in Florida where he killed his girlfriend
Ok, that's the extent of my Turlock knowledge

har, har...
;)
Seriously, anyone from WC or Danville would tell you the joke was on ANYONE from Oak (bleech) or the City or much less, Marin...the East Bay (and not you, nor Flow; Fremont? Are you kidding? No one admits to being from Fremont; it's the Jersey of CA!), but the real East Bay, began on the E slope of the Berk Hills...Just goes to show, everyone can be a snob, eh?
Having lived in all of those places, it's either the real coast (HMBay or SCruz) or Diablo, for me, anyhoo!!!

For me it was all about open space, and you couldn't beat the EBay in the 60s and 70s for that...and warmer, as you note (others would of course, find fault with that)...I hated Seatle, and thus Portland, and therefore, SF, by extension, for the weather alone (too gray, too cold, too consistent, ya know?), but that's cause I am a warm weather sort...
Just shocked me as a kid to find so many folks at Cal looked down their noses at ANY one from the EBay, ya know? Meaning, the birth place of free speech and all, and here I was finding the kids there were snobs of the first order.
Ironic, I thought...

That and I'm getting tired of always being cold. The cold is only going to get worse since all the climate change models show this burg getting colder and not warmer.
But it's one difficult place to leave. As evidence, all I have to see are my occasional bloody fingernails from holding-on. Though it's one of the few places that I've lived where I'm always happy to return from either vacations or biz trips.
I'm with you on Santa Cruz or Half Moon Bay. Plus, I always have Moss Beach or Princeton on my mind. Those towns seem so peaceful, with all that you hear are the crashing of the waves.
When I was with Sun in Palo Alto, I was looking at moving to Santa Cruz but just saw a good part of my life being spent on 85.
btw: GO A's!!! I'm trying to put my feelings for wolfe aside and enjoy the season. Between the A's and the season that my hometown Pirates are having it's one of the best seasons in sometime. Ok, the Gigantes in 2010 was pretty special as well.
